What I Do:I am a non-licensed, freelance landscape architect. I design residential yards, including:
hardscape (things like patios, paths, retaining or block walls, arbors, etc.),
planting (themed, mixed, or special plantings),
and irrigation.I can do a full-fledge Construction Documents package with lots of detail, or a simple concept plan, or just consultation, whatever you need. What is the technical difference between licensed and non? This refers to a licensure given by CLARB, something like Certified Landscape Architecture Registration Board. It is similar to the licensure of a lawyer or doctor. Since I don't have that, I can still do a residence design or other similar small projects on the basis of knowledge, but I can't put my seal on it.Is landscape architecture the same as landscape design? Not necesarily. At Texas A&M University, where I went to school, they are two separate and distinct majors, taught in different colleges, even at opposite ends of the campus! Landscape design deals mainly with residential: yards, pretty much just planting and maybe some decorative architectural stuff. Landscape architecture, on the other hand, is much more technical. We can draw up contruction details for built elements, design grading and drainage (dealing with hydrology issues). Our field is much bigger too, from small community gardens, to entire City planning, wetland remediation, even high-way design, depending on the specialty of a particular firm. Here in California, it seems people who are not licensed are refered to as "designers," which I somewhat resent because where I come from it's a whole different degree. Here is my resume.Career Goals:I hope someday to be part of a team of designers who plan zoos, wildlife reserves, or another form of ecological design. It is my dream to help animals in an innovative way where I can demonstrate my skills and stay out of the laboratory. Here are some houses I saw and sketched in pen. All were done in 30 minutes.
Landscape architects are the planners for the future.
Landscape Contractors
These are Landscape Contractors and companies I have reviewed and/or coroborated with on design projects, and I like their work.
